Description
The Peters and Reed pottery co. (incorporated in 1901in

) made
this early 1900s Arts & Crafts "Moss Aztec" pattern vase. Adam Reed and J.D. Peters asked Frank Ferrel, one of the designers at Weller to design some pieces for them. The "Moss Aztec" line was the most famous that Ferrel designed for them and was produced between 1905 and 1912. The pottery has a red clay body that was glazed then dipped in a mixture of paraffin and coal oil, which gave the pieces their green cast. The red clay pieces of this pattern are the older ones, whereas later 1920s versions were of white clay. The 1921 catalog describes the pottery line as having "the quiet effect of the rich red brown tones of the Historic Aztec Indians coupled with the apparent mossy deposit of nature." Upon personally handling pieces from this pattern, I have felt like I am holding an ancient artifact.
This particular Moss Aztec tall tapered vase measures 10 inches tall and is of the older red clay with matte green finish and glossy brown glaze inside. The vase has a high relief pine cone, needle spray and branch design, reminiscent of the Arts & Crafts era. This piece is unsigned (as they typically were not) but the technique and design are attributed to Peters & Reed.
The vase is in very good antique condition for its age with some minor surface wear, light surface nicks and flea bites common for this pottery showing red clay and also a dark black spot on rim, as photographed. Please see photos for condition and below for more measurements.
