Description
I'm not an expert on art pottery, but I've seen a lot of it, and this strikes me as an unusual piece. Mostly because of the color. I did a lot of looking online and could not find another piece in this color, or the exact vase form, even in another color. It bears resemblance to Weller or McCoy pottery, or maybe Zanesville, and the way the glaze looks on the bottom seems similar to some Roseville pieces (the kind with a sticker, not the raised mark). The vase looks like it was made in a 2-part mold with faint seams on two sides. For all I know this is from California, but it looks like Ohio pottery to me. I also saw some Niloak pieces that were
similar in shape
, and we
actually
found a small Niloak swirl vase in the same box, at the same estate as this vase (Both were stashed away in a basement since the 1950s with Made in Japan planters and a Hull vase, not an art pottery collection---these were just vases they used or were given as gifts in the 1930s-50s).
Condition: There is a very small chip on the side of the base and a tiny flaw that looks like maybe a bubble in the glaze, located on the underside of the belly, near the base. If you look very closely there are some very faint crazing lines in the glaze. The surface has some tiny specks which seems like they are inside the glaze, but there may be some small surface marks/scuffs as well. This was covered in soot, and while we seriously cleaned it, the vase may need some further deep cleaning.
Measures about 5" tall x 3-1/2" wide
