A little history lesson (not that YOU need one) as to why this piece is extremely special and important, Per Vasefinder:
"Paul Saint Gaudens (1900-1954) was the son of Annetta J. and Louis St. Gaudens and nephew of the legendary sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens. He was a student of Frank Applegate at the School of Industrial Art in Trenton, New Jersey, Charles Fergus Binns at Alfred, Alexander Archipenko at the Institute of Beaux Arts Design in New York and Oscar Louis Bachelder in Candler, North Carolina, to just mention a few. From studying Paul Saint Gauden's pottery, it is clear that Bachelder had a tremendous influence because of the incredible throwing technique, which is an integral part of his art. Paul set up several studios with the most notable being: Orchard Kilns at Cornish, New Hampshire and Panther Hammock Studio in South Miami, Florida. His work can be best described as primarily low-fired wares, which were thrown with the most accurate detail demonstrating a super sculptural folk art edge like no other potter we have seen from the early era. He truly was one of the great artists of the American Studio Pottery Movement. Saint Gaudens exhibited at the Syracuse Ceramic Nationals in 1933, 1934 and 1938."
Additional information. Paul also studied at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, at the Academy in Paris, the Julian Academy and the Grande Chaumiere. Paul began experimenting with pottery with the renowned W.P.A. artists William & Marguerite Zorach who had joined the Cornish Colony of Artists as had other accomplished and aspiring artists.
The owning family spent their summers in Cornish and were friends of the St. Gaudens. Provenance supplied upon purchase if desired.
