Description
Here is a really rare Chelsea Keramic Art Works Robertson & Sons majolica type pitcher. A likely prototype of the popular Dedham Pottery blue and white Day Night or Morning Evening pitcher, but done in polychrome glazes depicting the crowing rooster and owl with crescent moon. It was made in the Chelsea section of Boston between 1872 and 1880 by the Robertson and Sons firm, James, Alexander, and Hugh.It measures 5 1/4 inches tall, 5 3/4 inches wide, and 3 7/8 inches deep. There is touch up repair to rim roughness and one small chip, but it is in generally good condition with no cracks, firing flaws, or other issues.
When James died in 1880, Alexander left for California to work at Roblin and Halcyon, and Hugh founded the Dedham Pottery.
Marked with the firm's die-stamped 3 line mark. A nice early piece of Massachusetts New England art pottery. If you have any questions please click on our username or visit our store page and feel free to email through the gallery or call Jim Messineo at JMW Gallery.
