Description

Here is a nice and very rare Chelsea Keramic Art Works redware pillow vase with applied floral decoration.  It was made in the Chelsea section of Boston between 1872 and 1880 by the Robertson and Sons firm, James, Alexander, and Hugh.  When James died in 1880, Alexander left for California to work at Roblin and Halcyon, and Hugh founded the Dedham Pottery.
The red clay vessel itself is in generally good condition with no chips, but there are many losses to the applied decoration, no cracks, firing flaws, or repairs.  It measures 6 1/4 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and 3 inches deep.  Marked with the firm's die-stamped 3 line mark.  A nice early piece of Massachusetts art pottery influenced by French, Chinese, and Asian ceramics.   If you have any questions please click on our username or visit our store page and feel free to email through the gallery or call Jim Messineo at JMW Gallery.
