Description
For sale is a gorgeous Pewabic Pottery Commemorative tile celebrating the 90th anniversary of Pewabic Pottery. It is in the pinecone pattern made popular by one of Pewabic's founders, Mary Chase Stratton. The original was designed circa 1907-1910 for a fireplace in a private home on East Grand River Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan.I find this particular pine cone tile made in 1998 is the prettiest of the pine cone tiles that have come out over the years. One of the newer ones is a fatter pinecone that just isn't a nice proportion to me (I am particular, as I am an artist.)
Stamp on back indicates it was made for the 90th Anniversary of Pewabic Pottery in 1998. There is a symbol on the back also, which I believe indicates the potter who made it.
Measures approximately 5 1/4" square.
Pewabic is a National Historic Landmark pottery founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1903. Today it continues to be an active working pottery, architectural tile studio, ceramic arts education center and vibrant cultural destination that attracts visitors from around the world. Founders were n
eighbors Mary Chase Perry, a successful china painter, and Horace Caulkins, a dental equipment supplier and kiln manufacturer, who came together to build a pottery in turn-of-the-century Detroit. Ultimately, it would outlast all the other tile and pottery producers of their time.
