Description
FREE SHIPPINGApproximately 7" t., these Art Deco candle holders were designed by Viktor Schreckengost for Gem Clay Forming Company (Sebring), when he was just a teenager.
Not produced except for a tiny handful of trials. This pair was in his home at the time that Henry Adams organized the Cleveland Museum of Art retrospective exhibition for 2000-2001, and were photographed in black/white then. Clearly, the artist felt they were important enough to keep all his life. I purchased them a few years ago, from an estate sale at the family home, held when the house had finally been sold.
At some point, Viktor painted them bright yellow--and one was broken in half and then professionally restored. But in depicting classical female forms, they do point to some popular motifs of the roaring twenties, while also showing what was on his mind as a young man.
I'm Mark Bassett, author and collector. For years, I sold here under the name "potterybooks."
I frequently recommend the groups Cowan Pottery Collectors and Pottery Collector on Facebook. Great place for beginners and advanced collectors to mingle and learn more about Cowan and other art pottery.
