    Description

    Disclaimer:
Alcohol stoves are inherently dangerous.  By adding fuel and creating fire in and around the stove the operator of the stove assumes all responsibility and liability for any accident, injury, death, uncontrolled fire, etc. that results from use and operation of the stove.  The manufacturer of the stove provides no fuel or ignition source with the stove and shall be held harmless from any resulting actions from the stove's use or misuse.
Never attempt to extinguish a burning alcohol stove with water!  Always use stove in a well ventilated area.
The RUCAS HD is sold as a kit which includes:
    (1) RUCAS HD Stove  (Handmade in the USA)
    (1) Printed Instruction Sheet
    (1) Plastic 8oz. Fuel Bottle from Vargo Outdoors
    (alcohol fuel
    NOT
    included)
All shipped securely in a sturdy cardboard box.
The ultralight, incredibly strong, and compact design of the RUCAS HD lends itself to backpacking where weight, space and durability are premium qualities.  Because the RUCAS HD is made from a repurposed aluminum bottle, occasional small dings in the outer wall and color variations are normal.
"Repurposed" is a better term than "recycled" because value is actually added to an item that has served its initial purpose.  These aluminum bottles would normally get "recycled" by being crushed and melted down - with the raw material being reused after much refining and processing.  However, by taking the bottle and "repurposing" it, we can add value with a minimum of processing and no extra expenditure of precious resources.
The RUCAS HD is a pot-pressurized side burner style of alcohol stove.  The rolled lip of the stove is formed in a mechanical process under great pressure that locks the unit into a single piece.  There are no moving parts in the RUCAS HD, no rivets, and no JB weld.
I will cover the basics of the RUCAS HD in this eBay listing, but a far better way to understand how the RUCAS HD works is to
watch the official RUCAS HD video on YouTube
.  The video link below will open in a new window on desktop computers.  (It may not work on mobile apps.)

If the video link doesn't work, you can always go to YouTube's website and search for "RUCAS HD Alcohol Stove" and look for the following video icon from YouTube username "WheeliePete":
The RUCAS HD requires no pot stand.  The stove itself is your pot stand.  The efficiency of the stove is dependent on the pot being placed directly on top of the stove once the stove is primed.  I STRONGLY encourage that you watch the YouTube video referenced above.  It will, in detail, explain how the stove works and how to get maximum performance and efficiency out of your RUCAS HD.
The RUCAS HD will self prime by simply pouring 1.5 - 2 ounces of fuel in the center well, lighting the stove, and waiting for the side jets to blossom (about 2-3 minutes).  However, what I recommend is a "Fast-Prime" technique which will have the RUCAS HD at full blossom in 15-20 seconds.  See the video above on YouTube for a demonstration of the "Fast-Prime" technique.  The included printed instructions also cover the "Fast-Prime" technique.
The RUCAS HD will generally run for approx.17-19 minutes on 2oz of fuel, but you'll only need approximately half that time (and fuel) to bring 2.5 cups (20oz) of water to a full rolling boil.  (Boiling times will vary depending on temperature, altitude, pot size (and construction), water temperature, etc.)  Unused fuel can be easily poured back into the fuel bottle once the stove has cooled to the touch.  (The procedure to reclaim unburnt fuel is covered in the included instructions.)
The RUCAS HD runs on alcohol fuel, the two most readily available of which are HEET in the yellow bottle (methyl alcohol sold as gas-line antifreeze) and Denatured Alcohol.  HEET is available at Wal-Mart, auto parts stores, and most large chain retailers that have an automotive section.  Denatured alcohol can be found in the paint department of hardware stores.  Denatured Alcohol is also sold as a glass cleaner and marine-grade stove fuel.
    You
    should not
use Isopropyl alcohols (99% or 70% rubbing alcohol) as the impurities they contain cause the stove to give off a yellow, sooty flame that will turn your stove and your cooking pot black.  If you use the pure alcohol fuels (such as HEET and Denatured Alcohol) there will be no soot, no residue, and no odor left on your stove or your gear.
    DO NOT USE
petroleum-based fuels such as gasoline, white gas, kerosene, etc. with the RUCAS HD
In the pictures below, you can see some of the different pots that work on the RUCAS HD.  Everything from the 5" diameter GSI Pinnacle Soloist, all the way to a big kitchen pot, the RUCAS HD holds them all.
I prefer the GSI Pinnacle Soloist pot for it's capacity, light weight, and the ability to store all my cooking gear inside (including the RUCAS HD) when I'm backpacking.  (Please note, as shown in the pictures below, the proper way to use the stove is to place your pot directly on top of the stove once the burner ring has blossomed (primed).
    RUCAS HD Specs:
    Weight:  approximately 1.35oz
Dimensions are approximately 2.60" wide and 1.93" tall.
The RUCAS is more than 1/4" wider than the common extruded aluminum bottle alcohol stoves made from Bud Light bottles.  Larger Diameter = More Stability in the field.
The RUCAS HD's strength and durability comes from the wall thickness of the extruded aluminum bottle it is repurposed from.  The RUCAS HD container wall is over 5x thicker than a soda/beer can and 67% thicker than the Bud Light bottle stoves.
Fuel Capacity: 3oz. (The pointer in the picture is showing approximately where 2oz of fuel fills to.)  As stated above, 2oz of fuel would be way more than enough for the water boiling duties of a backpacker's freeze-dried meal.
Many of the alcohol stove sellers on eBay include a tinfoil "windscreen" in their kits.  I choose to include a quality alcohol fuel bottle from Vargo Outdoors with each RUCAS kit.
This translucent plastic fuel bottle allows you to see how much fuel you have left.  Handy markings on the back of the bottle allow you to measure your fuel out.  The cap has a tapered seal and a flip up spout.
As with any alcohol stove (and pretty much any backpacker stove for that matter) you will need to use a windscreen, but a windscreen can be made from nearly anything.  I created a video showing how you can make a windscreen for .  Again, if you'd like to see it, you can go to Youtube's website and search for "How to build a .00 windscreen".  You can also search by YouTube username "WheeliePete".  here's what the video icon will look like: (It's an old video with way too much talking, so skip to 1:20 for the start of the tutorial.)
And just in case you needed one more reason to go with the RUCAS:  Here's before & after pictures of what happens when a 200 pound man stands on the RUCAS and then one of the popular "Pop Can" style construction alcohol stoves that you see a lot of here on eBay.
    Please
    DO NOT
make a practice of standing on your RUCAS.  I do it in the official RUCAS HD YouTube video just to demonstrate structural integrity vs. a pop can stove.  It's a stove, not a step stool. ;-)
