This intriguing example of Sebring's scarce art pottery Leigh Artware line, created about 1930, is a wall pocket that measures about 7-5/8" tall x 5" wide. Designed by the art director Gale Turnbull and made about 1930. (A few years later, he had moved to California to begin work as the art director for Vernon Kilns.)
This beautiful lavender (or "orchid") glaze really shows off the modernist stairstepped designs. The form was also used for a Sebring Pottery vase, which came in two heights.
Note that there are several tiny burst glaze bubbles, glazed-over bits of clay, or other tiny vagaries of the making process. One of these, which is easier to feel than to see, may be a teensy pinprick-sized nick. Not sure. No large chips, no hairlines, and no repairs.
If you have never heard of this concern, join the crowd. Fortunately, there is an article about them in a recent back issue (Fall 2016) of the JOURNAL of the American Art Pottery Association (by yours truly). This shape appears in factory advertising reproduced in the article.
